Medical Arbiter Program

Help the workers’ compensation system run smoothly. Become a medical arbiter and perform medical arbiter exams.

Becoming a medical arbiter

Physicians can provide meaningful public service by becoming a medical arbiter. Join a network of more than 300 physicians in Oregon who perform impartial examinations of injured workers. You can play an essential role in helping the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Division resolve disagreements over the impairment findings used at claim closure.

The medical arbiter examination has a distinctive focus on impairment findings. It does not address compensability, treatment options, or other issues typically discussed in an independent medical examination report. Physicians new to the Medical Arbiter Program receive one-on-one training from the department before their first arbiter evaluation. In addition, participating physicians receive feedback on their arbiter reports. The Workers’ Compensation Division, part of the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services, administers the program.
